How to train your AI agent

Updated over 2 months ago

Summary

Want your AI agent to give smarter, more accurate answers based on your business information? This guide explains how to train your agent in Astra using your own content. You can add website links, upload documents, or create Question-and-Answer (Q&A) pairs - no technical setup or manual tagging required. Just add your sources, and Astra handles the rest.

Instructions

Astra’s AI agent automatically learns from the content you provide. You don’t need to format data in a special way or go through complex training processes.

You can train your agent using:

  1. Website links

  2. Documents

  3. Q&A pairs

Let’s go through each option step by step.

1. Train your agent using website links

You can add your company website or specific web pages that contain important business information, such as:

  • Help center articles

  • Product or pricing pages

  • Blog posts with guides or announcements

This is a quick way to make your AI agent aware of your existing online content.

Steps to add a website as a source

  • Log in to your Astra account.

  • In the left-hand menu, click on Agent.

  • Select the agent you want to train (or create a new one by clicking on + New agent).

  • Go to Knowledge source.

  • Select Website and click on Add website button to add your website or help center link.

  • Paste your website URL.

  • Click Fetch URLs.

Note: If you’re adding a website that includes subpages, make sure to select the checkbox that allows Astra to crawl and fetch those subpages as well.

Astra will scan the website and display a list of pages, including sub-pages.

  • Review the list and select the pages you want your agent to learn from.

  • Click Train agent.

Astra will now process the selected pages and train your AI agent using that content.

Once completed, your agent will use this information to provide more accurate responses.

2. Train your agent using documents

You can also upload files that contain useful information about your product or service.

Examples include:

  • Product manuals

  • Pricing sheets

  • FAQs

  • Onboarding guides

Supported file formats

  • PDF

  • Word (.docx)

  • Plain text (.txt)

  • Markdown (.md)

Steps to upload a document

  • Log in to your Astra account.

  • In the left-hand menu, click on Agent.

  • Select the agent you want to train (or create a new one by clicking on + New agent).

  • Go to Knowledge source and click on the Document.

  • Click on Add Document to proceed

  • Drag and drop your file, or click the upload area to select it from your computer.

  • Click Train agent.

Astra will process the document and use it to train your AI agent.

After training is complete, your agent will respond based on the uploaded content.

Note: When you upload training sources, you’ll now see a real-time progress bar. This gives you clear visibility into how your documents are being processed and lets you track the upload status step by step.

3. Train your agent using Q&A pairs

If you want your agent to give specific, consistent answers to common questions, you can create custom Q&A pairs.

For example:

  • Q: What is your refund policy?

  • A: We offer a full refund within 30 days of purchase.

This method is especially useful for:

  • Frequently asked questions

  • Policy explanations

  • Standard operating responses

Steps to add Q&A pairs

  • Log in to your Astra account.

  • In the left-hand menu, click on Agent.

  • Select the agent you want to train (or create a new one by clicking on + New agent).

  • Go to Knowledge source and click on the Q&A.

  • Click on Add your first question to proceed

  • Enter the title

  • Enter your questions and answer.

Note: You can add multiple questions if they share the same answer.

  • Click on Save changes when done.

Astra will train the agent using the Q&A pairs you added. Your AI agent will then use these predefined answers when responding to similar customer questions.

4. Coming soon: third-party knowledge base integrations

Soon, you’ll be able to connect external knowledge platforms directly to Astra.

Supported platforms will include:

  • Notion

  • Google Drive

  • Confluence

  • And more

This will allow you to sync your knowledge base automatically, without manually uploading files or copying content.

What happens after training?

Once you add your sources, Astra automatically processes the content. There’s no need for manual configuration.

After training is complete, your AI agent will use the newly added information to respond more accurately and consistently to customer queries.

If you update your content later, simply retrain the agent to ensure it reflects the latest information.
